Cumulonimbus Capillatus

3Oct11 sounding

Taken 3Oct11 evening. Very isolated but hugely vertically developed cloud system due to a small cold pocket of air over Malta in the upper reaches of the atmosphere at 500mb height (see chart). This created instability over the area. A thin moist-air layer at an altitude of 9.5km made the anvil quite thick when the air finally reached this stable layer. Very little wind shear was present. However, waterspouts could still form given the warm sea during this time of year.
