The cloud formations were caused by complex low pressure systems in the western and central Mediterranean and due to a warm front that passed over the area, refer to 3rd thumbnail. Wind shear was present. The first thumbnail shows a broad view of the stratocumulus clouds as it cleared later in the morning while the second thumbnail shows limited instability but very moist airmass at the low mid-level of the atmosphere.
