Halloween Storm
/ 0 Comments / in Misc, Random WeatherSevere thunderstorm over the Maltese Islands on the morning of that day due to a very small low pressure system to the western side of the Maltese Islands. The immediate right sector of this low contained cloud bands that produced heavy rain and a few waterspouts that moved over the Islands from the south. From the weather sounding, it seems that instability and the veering of wind from SSE to SW was enough to produce the waterspouts though normally more wind shear is need for such a phenomena. It is interesting to note that the heavy rains that affected Malta on that morning were nothing to the torrential downpours that hit Sicily over the same weekend as some areas reported above 600mm of rain in a matter of 48 hours. The surface pressure chart also indicated various occluded fronts associated within the compact low pressure system.
