As translucidus
/ 0 Comments / in Altrostratus, Medium LevelsA patch of darker grey altostratus cloud was seen passing over the area. As the sun’s position was still easy to identify, this cloud could not be categorized under the variety ‘opacus’. However, it was thick enough to produce precipitation as clearly seen in the background through lines hanging underneath the cloud. The first thumbnail is the weather sounding depicting lots of moisture but also a very stable airmass starting from an altitude of around 3.6km up till the tropopause whilst the second thumbnail is the visible satellite image depicting a mass of cloud over the Libyan Sea extending to the Central Mediterranean. Since the precipitation was light, it seems to have evaporated before reaching the ground despite the air at lower levels was not particularly dry. The final thumbnail is the same photo using different camera settings that show the cloud’s feautures even better which even shows some non-spectecular undulations.
