Mistral severe gales
/ 0 Comments / in Misc, Random WeatherA video showing the affects of a severe Westerly gale (Force 9-10) over the Maltese Islands. Cirkewwa Bay from which the video was taken is the most exposed beach to such very strong wind blowing from the West. This gale was the result of a low pressure system that further intensified over the Central Mediterranean as a result of very cold air coming in from Northern Europe and contrasting with the warm sea temperature. The weather further worsened when the cold front seen in the surface pressure chart passed over the Maltese Islands when the video was shot resulting in continous wind rather than gusts. Such mid-latitude cyclone is more common in the Winter months hence such gale could be considered as a bit early for the season. This was preceded by a lengthy stretch of dry and warm weather which could have further intensified the thermal contrats between warmth and cold. The first thumbnail shows a wave which was photographed on that day while the weather sounding in the second thumbnail indicated that this cold air created a heavy thermal against the surface warmth hence the formation of cumuliform clouds. The final thumbnail shows the sea wave height that was correctly predicted by the weather chart.
