Ci intortus
/ 0 Comments / in Cirrus, High LevelsFormation of widespread cirrus fibratus intortus clouds in the afternoon as the tail edge of a cold front passed over the Maltese Islands. The weather sounding on the first thumbnail showed the cloud formation at an altitude above 6.8km that of course had below zero temperatures and also a very strong SW jet stream which caused the entanglement of ice crystals that produce this specific cloud rather than the neatly arranged fibratus lines. Isolated patches of cirrus have no significance but when widespread as per this photo, indicate a change in weather normally caused by a dying cold front hence normally being the last to form before the front peters out completely.
