Ci spissatus
/ 0 Comments / in Cirrus, High LevelsFormation of virga underneath what looked like cirrus spissatus clouds though some 30 minutes later after bringing my professional camera for a much closer shot it looked like the cloud transormed itself into cirrocumulus as seen in the first thumbnail. The cloud was identified as cirrus spissatus due to its grey base and lack of other features though the WMO never associated virga with the indentified cloud species. From the weather sounding on the fourth thumbnail, it is evident that the clouds had a base of at least 6.8km qualifying well into the high cloud category. At that level the air was also unstable, hence favouring the formation of high cumuliform clouds as evident by the cloud photos of the second and third thumbnails taken on the same day. The weather situation was a low pressure system over North Africa pumping an unseasonably mild airmass towards the Maltese Islands.
