Ci spissatus
/ 0 Comments / in Cirrus, High LevelsA large band of cirrus spissatus radiatus cloud extending for more than 100km across the sky from Sicily towards Malta. A mammatus feature could be observed in the background. The photo was taken from Paola situated on the SE of Malta. The cloud band could also be observed approaching the Maltese Islands from the west via the visible satellite imagery on the third thumbnail and which was circled in red for ease of reference. The first thumbnail is another photo shot of the same cloud band looking at it from the opposite end of the sky composed of cirrus spissatus or potentially altostratus. The second thumbnail is another shot of the same cloud. The cloud band seemed to be the result of a high-level frontal zone as the upper-level trough was moving away from the area seemingly creating an upper-level warm front with lots of positive vorticity as indicated on the fourth thumbnail. Finally, the weather sounding showed that the cloud band could have formed at altitudes of between 6000 and 8000 metres due to the presence of a moist airmass at that level which also feautured a sluggish Force 4 wind.
