Formation of cumulus cloud with rain falling at its base hence the sub-species praecipitatio, otherwise known as cumulus congestus. This cloud had formed due to a subtle short-wave at 500mb which moved southeastwards towards the Malta Channel (shown in the second and third thumbnails respectively). This had induced some thunderstorm clouds at sea over Eastern Malta. On land combined with very light NNW wind, this weather situation triggered the formation of the photographed cumulus cloud with rain shower over the extreme southeast of Malta. It formed rather late due to the lack of solar insolation because of the day`s high-level cloud cover. Without high clouds earlier on, this cloud could have gone to become an isolated thunderstorm in itself with potential severe weather phenomena because of wind shear.
