Persistent formation of cumulonimbus clouds caused by instability due to thermal contrasts. This is clearly depicted in the atmospheric sounding in Malta and the 500mb chart showing clearly a cold pool of air over the Central Mediterranean contrasting with a relatively warm sea surface temperature of around 15C.
